LinkedIn and SEO

I’m not an expert on SEO but I do know a few things about getting found on search engines. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is commonly used in web development to try to get your page to rank #1 on popular search engines such as Google.  I say try because I would be weary of anyone promising page 1. I’m not saying it’s impossible, it’s just hard.

LinkedIn and other Social Networks such as Facebook are indexed by search engines and it’s important to keep that in mind when creating and posting on these profiles.  Check your privacy settings to ensure that the right content is getting out.  If you don’t want your Facebook profile made public, then ensure that your privacy setting are set to keep things private.

All search engines use an algorithm it uses to index sites. The algorithm changes all the time but one thing is consistent across all search engines.  That is keyword rich relevant content. Keywords are the search words used in a search engine.  Try and use these words in your profile.  This will not only help you rank in LinkedIn but also on the various other search engines.

Finding the Right Hire on LinkedIn

Last week, I wrote about searching for a job on LinkedIn. I figure it is only fitting this week, I write about finding the right hire. There are three ways to find that perfect candidate on LinkedIn, one is placing an ad for a job, creating a search and looking for that perfect person and utilizing groups.

Placing an ad is similar to an ad you would place on Monster.com but (at least in my area) it’s less expensive. I love the idea of posting here as so many professionals are using LinkedIn, it only fitting that they would go here to look for their next job.  Remember when you signed up for LinkedIn and it asked if you were open to new opportunities? The search feature allows you to search through those profiles. These searches aren’t the cheapest route to go plus there’s your time to go through each profile and see if they’re a fit.

I’m not a big fan of paid for services on LinkedIn, there are usually ways to get around it.  If you’ve ever heard me speak on LinkedIn you will know that there is usually a group associated with whatever you’re searching for.  In this case, there are hundreds of groups in all different cities where people are posting their employment opportunities.  I would also join and post opportunities in the groups you are already a part of.  Use your network!

Searching for a Job?

The current unemployment rate is incredibly low in Calgary but that isn’t true for many parts of Canada and the US.  The good news is companies are hiring!  There are over 100,000 jobs listed on LinkedIn. The question is how do you search through 100,000 jobs to find the right one for you.

Before you start searching for that dream job, there are a few things you should do.  First things first, you need to complete your profile and get as many recommendations as possible. This is the first impression you are going to make to your potential employer so make it count.

Once your profile is complete, head over the jobs tab.  Select find jobs and the advance search tab.  It’s in here that you will find your dream job.  You can search by industry, position and even by company.  You can also see who of your contacts knows someone in that company.  Don’t be afraid to ask your contacts for introductions.  LinkedIn makes it incredibly easy for people do make those introductions.

Go ahead have a look, maybe your dream job is waiting for you.

Networking on LinkedIn

We all know that networking is a great way to meet people and in turn grow your business. LinkedIn is a great place to network and you don’t even need to leave your home or office!

There are hundreds of groups on LinkedIn that you can join and meet people who could benefit from your product or services. Join groups that are relevant to your products and services and interact with the members of that group.  People like to do business with who they know, like and trust.  Be patient it takes time for people to get to know you.

Another way to use LinkedIn is to connect with people who you meet at face to face networking groups.  It’s a great way to follow up and stay in touch with people.

Getting Noticed on LinkedIn

LinkedIn is one of the most powerful tools for business.  It is valuable tool in any sales persons toolbox. It is a great way to recruit new employees. It has hidden SEO (search engine optimization) capabilities. It’s a great way to stay in touch with your business connections and get recommendations from the people you have done business with.  It  is your resume online for everyone to see, which builds trust.  I could go on about all the reasons you should be on LinkedIn but I think I’ve made my point.

Once you’ve signed up and completed your profile, it’s time to start using it.  Connect with past clients and get recommendations.  It’s these recommendations that build trust.

Join groups and interact with the members of those groups. Joining groups is a great way to expand your network and build relationships.

Over the next few blogs, I will explain each of my points listed above and explain how to use LinkedIn to its fullest capabilities.

LinkedIn Advertising

I have to say that I’m a fan of LinkedIn Advertising.  The more I play and work with it, the more I like it.  I mean, I really like it. I really like it because business owners and other executives hang out on LinkedIn and therefore seeing your ad.  Business owners and executives are typically decisions makers.  You can even target your ad for just people who work in a specific industry or have a certain job title. There is even a filter for size of company you wish to target. Not to mention geographic and demographic features.

The ads are fairly simply to set up the hardest part is knowing your target audience and knowing what to say in your ad.  So as always test and measure to find out the right ad for you and your business.

Blog Topics

For most of us, including myself, what to write about is the hardest part of writing.  I sit and wonder what does my audience want to know? I try to search Twitter and various forums to find out what people are asking.  From these questions, its easy to write a blog, simply answer the questions.

Now, I’m sure you’re wondering where do I find these forums to find questions?  LinkedIn has a section for questions. They’ve even made it somewhat simple by calling it answers.   Here you can post questions and even better find answers.  This is a great tool to find blog topics.

LinkedIn

Here are just a few of the reasons why you should be LinkedIn.

Right now, I’m searching for a printer friend of mine.  I know he switched companies but I don’t know where he went.  If he updated his profile, I would know exactly where he is.  He is about to lose my order simply because I don’t know where he is.  Don’t let this happen to you. Keep your profile current.

LinkedIn is indexed by search engines.  Do you know how many calls I get because someone has searched my partial business name and Kelly and have come up with my profile?  Lots!

LinkedIn can build creditability with future clients.  People can go on your profile and see who you’ve done business with in the past and read recommendations from your past clients.

I could go on and on about LinkedIn. There are some people who have created a whole career just on teaching people how to use this network effectively.  I will write more about LinkedIn next week.  In the meantime, if you’re not signed up.  Sign up!
