LinkedIn and SEO

I’m not an expert on SEO but I do know a few things about getting found on search engines. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is commonly used in web development to try to get your page to rank #1 on popular search engines such as Google.  I say try because I would be weary of anyone promising page 1. I’m not saying it’s impossible, it’s just hard.

LinkedIn and other Social Networks such as Facebook are indexed by search engines and it’s important to keep that in mind when creating and posting on these profiles.  Check your privacy settings to ensure that the right content is getting out.  If you don’t want your Facebook profile made public, then ensure that your privacy setting are set to keep things private.

All search engines use an algorithm it uses to index sites. The algorithm changes all the time but one thing is consistent across all search engines.  That is keyword rich relevant content. Keywords are the search words used in a search engine.  Try and use these words in your profile.  This will not only help you rank in LinkedIn but also on the various other search engines.

Finding the Right Hire on LinkedIn

Last week, I wrote about searching for a job on LinkedIn. I figure it is only fitting this week, I write about finding the right hire. There are three ways to find that perfect candidate on LinkedIn, one is placing an ad for a job, creating a search and looking for that perfect person and utilizing groups.

Placing an ad is similar to an ad you would place on Monster.com but (at least in my area) it’s less expensive. I love the idea of posting here as so many professionals are using LinkedIn, it only fitting that they would go here to look for their next job.  Remember when you signed up for LinkedIn and it asked if you were open to new opportunities? The search feature allows you to search through those profiles. These searches aren’t the cheapest route to go plus there’s your time to go through each profile and see if they’re a fit.

I’m not a big fan of paid for services on LinkedIn, there are usually ways to get around it.  If you’ve ever heard me speak on LinkedIn you will know that there is usually a group associated with whatever you’re searching for.  In this case, there are hundreds of groups in all different cities where people are posting their employment opportunities.  I would also join and post opportunities in the groups you are already a part of.  Use your network!

Searching for a Job?

The current unemployment rate is incredibly low in Calgary but that isn’t true for many parts of Canada and the US.  The good news is companies are hiring!  There are over 100,000 jobs listed on LinkedIn. The question is how do you search through 100,000 jobs to find the right one for you.

Before you start searching for that dream job, there are a few things you should do.  First things first, you need to complete your profile and get as many recommendations as possible. This is the first impression you are going to make to your potential employer so make it count.

Once your profile is complete, head over the jobs tab.  Select find jobs and the advance search tab.  It’s in here that you will find your dream job.  You can search by industry, position and even by company.  You can also see who of your contacts knows someone in that company.  Don’t be afraid to ask your contacts for introductions.  LinkedIn makes it incredibly easy for people do make those introductions.

Go ahead have a look, maybe your dream job is waiting for you.

Networking on LinkedIn

We all know that networking is a great way to meet people and in turn grow your business. LinkedIn is a great place to network and you don’t even need to leave your home or office!

There are hundreds of groups on LinkedIn that you can join and meet people who could benefit from your product or services. Join groups that are relevant to your products and services and interact with the members of that group.  People like to do business with who they know, like and trust.  Be patient it takes time for people to get to know you.

Another way to use LinkedIn is to connect with people who you meet at face to face networking groups.  It’s a great way to follow up and stay in touch with people.

Getting Noticed on LinkedIn

LinkedIn is one of the most powerful tools for business.  It is valuable tool in any sales persons toolbox. It is a great way to recruit new employees. It has hidden SEO (search engine optimization) capabilities. It’s a great way to stay in touch with your business connections and get recommendations from the people you have done business with.  It  is your resume online for everyone to see, which builds trust.  I could go on about all the reasons you should be on LinkedIn but I think I’ve made my point.

Once you’ve signed up and completed your profile, it’s time to start using it.  Connect with past clients and get recommendations.  It’s these recommendations that build trust.

Join groups and interact with the members of those groups. Joining groups is a great way to expand your network and build relationships.

Over the next few blogs, I will explain each of my points listed above and explain how to use LinkedIn to its fullest capabilities.

#Hashtags

No, that is not a typo in my title.  # signifies a Hashtag.  Hashtags are a tool used in Twitter to group tweets by creating links within Twitter.  You will know they are Hashtags because they change colour and have # in front of them.

It is essential to use Hashtags when ever possible.  It will help people find you as the Hashtag will group your tweets along with other people tweeting about the same topic.

Unless you’re a big brand, I wouldn’t recommend creating your own Hashtag.  Chances are it won’t be something people are looking for. Instead use Hashtags that other people are using.

Some of my favourite Hashtags include #yyctraffic #Calgary #socialmedia #quote and #skilouise

Twitter Followers – Where Are You Hiding?

Getting people to follow you is one of the hardest things when you’re just getting started. It takes time before people start to notice you. Great content with Hashtags will get you noticed.  It does take time so be patient.

Follow Friday used to be a great way to build followers (#followfriday or #FF) it doesn’t work as well as it used to but it still works. Following people is another great way to build followers.  Most people will follow back if you have interesting tweets.  (There are some accounts that will follow everyone back.  They usually tweet with the Hashtag #followback.)

All your Social Media networks displayed on all your advertising, websites, blogs, and on your email signatures.

Making Money on Twitter

I’m sure it’s not the first time you’ve read this title but this is the first time I’ve used it. There are lots of ways to make money on Twitter.  Tweeting out commercials is one way but it’s not necessarily the best way.  Twitter is one big conversation.  Listening to the conversation will unravel leads.

People tweet what’s top of mind.  Search for those tweets and offer your assistance. Set up searches on a variety of Hashtags and keep an eye on it. You never know when someone is going to tweet looking for your services.

If you think of Twitter as a networking event, talking to people will be easier.  Anyone in sales has been to one of these events…. a room full of people ready to tell you what they do.  Pay attention, you never know when the perfect client will pop up.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all my readers.  I took a bit of a break over Christmas.  …it was a hard one after the loss of my furry little friend, Morgan.  I’m back and better than ever.  I’m focused and have a clear vision.  I spent a lot of time focusing on my goals and New Year Resolutions.  It’s extremely important to write out your goals and revisit them often.  It will keep you on track.

What are your goals for 2012? Are you thinking you’re going to spend more time marketing your business through Social Media.  What do you wish to achieve?  How will you know if its working if you don’t know what you want to achieve?  Once you know what you wish to achieve, then you can decide how you will get there.  Decide what tools (or Networks) you will use, who you will target, and then commit.

According to the Mayan calendar 2012 is the last year, so make it a good one!

My Dog Morgan

.

Many of you already know, my dog Morgan passed away this weekend.  She was more to me than a dog, she was my female ally in a house full of boys. (I have 3 sons.) We rescued her when she was 10 months old. She had been surrendered twice before we adopted her.  She wasn’t house broken, and had no training.  It didn’t take long for her to become part of our family.  She quickly learned that we were her forever pack.  She also learned her place in the pack. …which was below the cats.

I want to thank everyone for their comments on Facebook this weekend.  While I sat at home mourning the loss my friend, reading everyone’s comments was a great comfort.  It’s great to see so many people understand my heartache.
